The Barbara Krell Memorial Scholarship
This annual $1,000 scholarship is sponsored by the Viking Fest Corporation of Poulsbo as a memorial to Barbara Krell, a long-time volunteer with the committee. Barbara assisted the corporation in sponsoring the celebration of Poulsbo’s Norwegian heritage each May, thereby helping to raise funds for scholarships for local college bound high school seniors. She was a talented amateur artist and an active member of the Poulsbo Artists’ League, serving as the league’s historian at the time of her death. She found great pleasure in instilling children with an understanding and a love of art, serving for many years as an art docent at Breidablik Elementary School, near Poulsbo. Barbara also sang in her church’s contemporary choir, taught in its religious-education program, tutored for the Literacy Council of Kitsap County, and helped raise funds for breast cancer research. She loved the outdoors, especially the Olympic Mountains and the Grand Canyon. Barbara was an avid backpacker, hiker, and cross-country skier. Scenes from her hikes in the Olympic Mountains and the Grand Canyon were frequent subjects of her art.
